Lesson 2: Install The Window

Windows are perhaps the most vulnerable component in the exterior building envelope. Correct installation can avoid many moisture problems, thereby enhancing the durability of the building.

Of course using durable products is one key element of ensuring a waterproof seal. Tapes, membranes and sealants must be able to last the life of the structure. Choosing quality products from the onset will eliminate costly repairs as inferior products begin to deteriorate.

Secondly, proper layering of membranes and sheathing paper is critical to direct the flow of water away from the building. By following this short guide, every builder will be able to install a window which is sure to resist water penetration under most circumstances.

Finally, be sure to choose screws as a method of fastening the window in place. The holding power of a screw is far superior to a nail, and will reduce the risk of damage to the window from a misdirected hammer.
