Loads and Materials
Loads
Outdoor decks are usually not required to support the static loads of indoor floors, such as from bathtubs and freezers, but they are subject to wind and snow loads. A 1.9kPa live load and 0.5kPa dead load are the design loads frequently used to size wood members for outdoor decks in Canada. If higher snow loads are experienced in a particular area, these should be taken into consideration.
Materials
Lumber is not specially graded for use in landscaping structures. Designers and builders use the regular dimension lumber grades that will provide the required spans. No. 2 and better grade is appropriate for joists and built-up beams. Posts should be a minimum of 89 x 89mm, for posts up to 2m high, and wide enough to fully support all beam plies.
