Plank Walls
Traditionally used in marine applications, plank walls have become popular in residential and public areas where they offer a variety of design options.
Pressure-treated 140 x 140 mm (5-1/2 x 5-1/2in) posts are placed in holes spaced at 1.2m (4ft) the posts should extend below ground as much as they do above.
Treated lumber 38mm (1-1/2in) thick is placed against the posts during backfill so that the lumber is held in place by the backfill. The lumber may also be attached to the posts using galvanized nails or screws. Overlap the boards so that they join at different posts. Each board should span two bays.
In poorly drained soils a 300mm (12in) thick layer of gravel should be placed at the bottom of the wall and another 300mm (12 in) layer used as backfill.
