Plywood Walls
Plywood walls are a less common type and consist of pressure-treated plywood and pressure-treated 89mm round or square posts. Posts should be sunk to the frost line at 600mm (24in) spacings. Plywood 18.5mm (3/4in) thick is placed behind the posts and held in place by the backfill. The wall is anchored by threading plastic-coated galvanized wire rope through holes drilled in the plywood on either side of the post at two-thirds of the wall height. The wire rope is wrapped around the posts and secured with a U-bolt wire rope clip behind the plywood.
The free end of the wire rope is wrapped around buried deadmen and secured by a U-bolt wire rope clip. In tying the posts to the deadmen the wire rope assists in carrying the load of the soil backfill and requires a minimum breaking strength of 455 kg (1,000 lbs).
The deadmen should be 600mm (24in) of treated post buried behind the wall at a distance equal to their height above the base of the wall.
Preservatives should be liberally brushed on all cut ends and drilled holes. Deposit 300mm (12in) of gravel before backfilling to improve drainage.
