Siding, roofing, exterior trim and decking are some of the exterior wood products manufactured from a variety of species in B.C. From the distinctive look of Cedar to the sturdiness of Douglas fir and pine products, exterior wood products from British Columbia assure quality and durability wherever they are used.

Siding

Siding refers to wood that is used to clad the outside walls of buildings. British Columbia produces several siding products such as tongue and groove siding, shiplap siding, and board and batten siding. These siding products each have different shapes and are pre-dimensioned.

Bevelled shingles, typically of cedar, are another product widely used for siding buildings. Wood siding or cedar shingles add rustic charm, warmth and character to the outside appearance of buildings, especially homes.

Roofing

Wood roofing products include red cedar shakes and shingles. Shakes and shingles are naturally resistant to water, sunlight, and rot. They lend a warm, rustic quality to the exterior of a building, and are most often used for residential buildings. They are typically installed in their natural state, although stains, primers and paint may be applied.

Trim

Wood trim refers to non-structural finished wood that is added to buildings, typically around windows, doors and other openings, or to set off and edge panelling or cladding. Trim adds detail and refinement to wood exteriors, and also helps to cover and protect structural joints. Trim comes in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and can be custom sized.

Trim can be applied in its natural state or be sealed, primed, painted or stained.

Decking

Decking refers to wood that is used for the horizontal surface of exterior decks, verandas, porches or balconies.

Decking is available in a variety of woods and different dimensions. Common wood decking from British Columbia includes western red cedar, Douglas fir and pine.

Decking can be installed in its natural state or can be stained, primed or painted.

Fencing

Wooden fences provide security, privacy and screening of outdoor spaces, and are widely used in residential projects throughout North America.

British Columbia provides a range of wood fencing products from low picket fences to solid board fencing. Picket fences are typically 1.0 m to 1.2 m high and keep small children or pets in a yard. Solid board or panel fences are usually higher, and provide greater wind and view barriers. They are also commonly used to define and secure the perimeter of private property.

Other types of wood fencing include open lattice or louvered fences and screens, which are semi-transparent.

Fencing poles, pickets and boards are available in a variety of wood species, and can be installed in their natural state or can be stained, primed or painted.

Poles

British Columbia produces several wood pole products. These include poles used as pilings, mining-timbers, telephone poles, electric power line poles and telegraph poles.

Wood poles have a significantly higher work-load than thin walled steel poles. They are easy to handle, store, install, and safe to use. They are also easy to maintain.

British Columbia west coast species such as Douglas fir or western red cedar service a wide range of pole heights and load demands, and offer a sustainable supply of poles from 35 ft to 125 ft in height.

Treated Wood Products

Preservative-treated wood
This wood has been surface coated or impregnated by means of pressure with chemicals that improve resistance to damage from decay and insect attack. Preservative-treatment processes do not alter the basic characteristics of wood but do provide much improved service life for wood building materials in severe service conditions.

Fire-retardant treated wood
Fire-retardant treated wood (FRTW) is material that has been pressure-impregnated with special chemicals that improve the performance of wood products in a fire.

Fire-retardant chemical treatments retard the spread of flame and limit smoke production from wood in fire situations. This treatment enhances the fire performance of the products by reducing the amount of heat released during the initial stages of fire.

The treatment also reduces the amount of flammable volatiles released during fire exposure. This results in a reduction in the rate of flame spread over the surface. When the flame source is removed, treated wood ceases to char.
