Canada Wood College provides training on modern wood frame systems for professionals in the construction industry. The training is delivered in brief, full-time terms, where essential information required for wood frame projects is covered. The training does not require a lengthy absence from one's job and all Canada Wood College training is currently provided free of charge.

Introduction to Modern Light Wood Frame Building Systems

Who it is for

This program combines the course material from Builder Training Level 1 and Level 2, and is suitable for project managers, site supervisors, engineers, building inspectors, administrators and carpenters. Prior experience with wood is not required. This training is invaluable to those who are about to start new wood frame construction projects.

Program structure

This program will be taught over a three week term where the participants will attend daily classes. The instructors are construction experts from top Canadian vocational schools. Classroom lectures will be combined with practical demonstration. Extensive use of hand tools and power tools will not be required during this course.

What is taught

Introduction to Modern Light Wood Frame Building Systems teaches the basic assembly of modern wood frame systems including framing and building envelope systems.

Participants will learn the following:

  • Basic framing techniques
  • How to read blueprints of simple wood frame buildings.
  • How to protect the buildings from rain water penetration using weather barrier, water-proofing, and flashing installation methods.
  • Introduction to vapour barriers and air barriers.
  • Truss assembly principles and installation.
  • Site management practices.
  • Material estimating.

Participants will also learn how building codes and fire codes impact wood frame designs, and how proper design can help make any project safe and durable.

Canada Wood is offering a new training program called the Introduction to Modern Light Wood Frame Building Systems. This program provides the course material of Designer Training Level 1, and is suitable for architects, engineers, and designers. Prior experience in wood frame construction is not required, but will be preferred.

What is taught

This training program is invaluable to those who are about to start new wood frame construction projects. The curriculum will focus on the design of modern wood frame building systems.

Participants will learn the following:

  • Structural design
  • Fire protection
  • Acoustic and thermal insulation
  • Building envelope and durability
  • Electrical and piping
  • Together with a scaled WFC model kit construction
